The Garda Gold, an age-old tradition

Thinking on warm, sun and dry that an olive tree needs to produce golden fruit, Lake Garda stands as the last territory to the north that allows high-quality production. Climbing the plant it is hard to not lose concentration admiring the superb view of the Italian largest lake.

The extra virgin olive oil is recognized with D.O.P.the Italian label for special products, by the EEC in 1997, and is one of the best in Italy. Its culture is not simple as in other zone, in particular the Mediterranean, because the plants are high and irregular, requiring different treatment in terms of labour. This affect the price of course, but beyond that, also the quality.

Olio del Garda DOP, the oil of Brenzone, is the primary product in the preparation of the majority lakes recipes and to the Mediterranean diet, bringing out the flavor of the fish the flavor of Monte Baldo’ s product. The total production does not allow export, leaving the territory this excellence limiting its trade within the local people.

The water of our lake is a source of inspiration for poets and writers who have stayed here on its banks. It looks like a mirror and the desire to swim and abandon in it is stronger than the wonder that you have to contemplate the fortune to sit on its shores.

To the lake water also Brenzone owes his fortune. Punta Veleno - The Gates of Hell

“Abandon all hope, you who climb here” is the revisited Dante´s quote people find on the first 180 degree turn, where it will miss 7 of the 8 km of the climb. This uphill catapults from 60 meters above sea level to the 1.000 of Prada, the highest Brenzone hamlet. Every year on this ascent take place a bike uphill where the bikers over the road can challenge themselves. Extreme Race Punta Veleno this year will be taken the first of September where everybody can compare his time with the time made by professionist in the 36th edition of the Giro del Trentino in 2012.

The race, inserted in Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) calendar was for Brenzone an event with a great media impact, with all association united to collaborate in order to prepare this big event. Waiting for Giro d’Italia, the legacy, is this annual meeting really interesting between the many cyclist that every day run on Brenzone’s road. Punta Veleno was the first real race for team Colombia Coldeportes, the beetles that brought a great enthusiasm on the lake, when they tried to climb for the first time finding plenty of snow.

Is easy walk up to Castello and immerse yourself in this natural paradise while looking at the faces of the riders understand the effort that must be done to climb this monster. At every turn seem to get to heaven, such is the slope (average of 12.7% and in the toughest stretch of 4 km to 16.5% with steps of 20%) even if the higher you climb, the more you grasp the immense beauty of our land. Ferragosto in Brenzone - Saint Roch

The days between mid-August are special in Brenzone, in addition of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in the little hamlet of Marniga is celebrated one of the religious icon of the town, San Rocco.

The tradition of this festival is very old and the inhabitants are proud to be the passage of the baton in the Christian community life. A statue of the Saint, from the church of San Giovanni Battista, is carried in procession while rose petals are scattered.
In addition to this rite, usually follow three days of feast with dance, music and folklore, especially for children with a day full of games dedicated. The house specialty is the fantastic “risotto” accompanied by a sprinkling of parmesan cheese.

Is such a good thing the respect of the traditions (although some, which we discuss in the next post, have been changed) and is a pleasure to remember the icon of Saint Roch. The story tell that a Breton dog, named Reste, began to steal from the table of his master Gottardo Pallastrelli, a piece of bread every night. The master intrigued, following the animal, discovered that the noble gesture was made for the ill and suffering Rocco. Gottardo was converted in provide assistance to the needy and sick of the plague, became the first Saint Roch’s follower. From that day San Rocco is pictured next to a dog.

Rocco was treated by human "like a dog", and it is a dog that redeems the category treating Rocco "as a human". By us, in Hotel Brenzone, this sentence has a special meaning, convinced that in every dog we can find what in human is nowadays difficult to find, loyalty, vigilance, strength and virtue.

Hotel Brenzone, where also Nuvolari was living slowly

A yellow sweater, blue pants and brown leather vest, this was the “Nivola” equipment for his race. We are talking about the champion Tazio Nuvolari, born in Mantua but true lover of Lake Garda. Nuvolari is one of the famous guest who stayed in our Hotel in our 100 years history.

The Garda was special for Tazio, because many important events of his life took place around, as one of its first victories in Verona, or as the meeting with Gabriele D'Annunzio, where the poet in addition to giving him a commemorative plaque engraved the sentence "fastest man of the world, the slowest animal on earth", gift him a golden turtle that became his trademark, still recognized.

Twice winner of the Mille Miglia at the age of 56 in Brescia, passing to say hello to fellow drivers, he was hired and literally “put” in the car bringing again thrill trough the spectators. In 1930 was the first man able to cover the distance of the race with an average of over 60 miles/h. Nuvolari was like this: simple and passionate, characteristic that here in Brenzone we know well.

How to not wonder that the benefits of the fresh lake air and the mixed cousine, between delicate fish  and strong flavors of the mountain, help Tazio in his triumps. A sure fact is that Nuvolari in Brenzone was not in hurry but he married our vision of indulge, in the joy of complete rest in the nature with a so pristine landscape.

Brenzone, the new Brazil for Kitesurfer

You, the board and a kite able to transports you to the mercy of the wind, and let you experience the thrill of the speed, if not for the grace of the flight. It is one of the extreme sport and although it is so recent, has ancient origins. In Europe in ‘800 there were already who imagining the power wind in of transport and the opportunity to fly upon a board. We are talking about Kitesurfing.

In Brenzone over the past decade was born spontaneously the culture for this sport. The development was due to the extremely favorable conditions of wind. Its strength and continuous, unique and is a pleasure to learn how to fly with the board caressed by the sunset.

There are many schools in the village, which has the highest number in percentage, and of course one also in Magugnano where you can see every day a motorboat for support the kiters’ tricks. It is not unusual sit drinking a cocktail in the restaurant "Al Vapor", see and greet the guys with the large costumes and American hats.

Night excursion with a historic ship

In the Brenzone’s dialect she is called “Siora”, Lady in English, although for years has not been considered as it has to. She was waiting in the Toscolano’s harbor the restoration in order to get her back to the lake. Veronica is a ship built in 1926 in Peschiera del Garda and she used to lighten the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio up, during the races organized on the lake in that period.

Since 2001, its unique charm came back and now she is considered the most historic boat that takes advantage of breezes, to sail from north to south on this mirror of the sky. Now the boat is based in Malcesine’s harbor, but thanks to the Brenzone hotel association, our guests have the opportunity to spend a romantic evening aboard, imagining themself in the role of brave captains.

Every Wednesday, is organized a tour lasts 2 hours that will allow you to appreciate from an unusual point of view all the Brenzone’s  beauties. The ship will circumnavigate the island called “Trimelone” (three cantaloupesJ) and then continue among all the villages.
